Last Saturday at 3 o'clock Joseph Ensminger aged 98 years died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jones Rountree on West Main Street. The funeral occurred from the residence Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Dr. Tuttle and Rev. AJ Alexander. The interment occurred at the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Joseph Ensminger was born in harrisburg, PA Sept 14, 1798 and lived in that city until he attained his majority, being married there to Miss Jane Frazier. They left Harrisburg after marriage and moved to Hamilton, Ohio where they resided for several years on a farm. In 1826 they removed to Montgomery County and settled six miles southeast of Crawfordsville entering government land. To them were born five children: Elizabeth, William, Benjamin, Horace P. and Ellen. In 1839, Mrs. Ensminger died and Mr. Ensminger selling his farm, removed to Crawfordsville and became a contractor for masony. He had learned the mason's trade in PA and had become wonderfully proficient in it, having made it a careful study. No man was ever better posted than he and he had charge of the construction of the first brick buildings built in Crawfordsville, doing a great deal of the work himself. After removing to Crawfordsville Mr. Ensminger married Mrs. Jane Canine, widow of John Canine and to them were born three children, all of whom still live, Mrs. Jones Rountree, Dr. S. L. Ensminger and Mrs. Fannie Hatfield. Mr. Ensminger lived an active and useful life until quite advanced in years, his splendid constitution and firm will sustaining him much longer than the average man. He was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church and wa smost attentive to his religious duties. Mr. Ensminger was a Whig originally but in 1854 united with the new Republican party and continued in steadfast allegiance thereto until his death, taking great interest in politics. He was a fine old gentleman esteemed by all and passing from earth, full of years and honors, his life stands as a bright example.

Joseph Ensminger, aged 98 years died on Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jones Rountree on West Main Street. The funeral occurred from the residence at 2:30 o'clock Sunday and will be conducted by Rev. Alexander, pastor of Center Church of which Mr. Ensminger was a member, Rev. Dr. Tuttle will also assist. Joseph Ensminger was born in Pennsylvania in 1798. He lived in Ohio till of grown estate and in 1826 came to this county. He was a fine old man of sterling character. His wife has long since been dead. He was the father of Mrs. Rountree and Dr. S.L. Ensminger. - kbz
